The 1 WordPress Table Plugin You Need
by Tom EwerFebruary20th,2012 4 Responses
WordPress table - you're doing it wrong.
I get it – we all love the “7,278 WordPress Plugins For Better Blockquotes” posts. But if just one plugin gets the job done, does listing the best of the rest really do us any good?
I say no, and therefore introduce you to just one plugin today – WP-Table Reloaded. If you want to create tables in WordPress, this is your one-stop solution.
I’m not just full of hot air either – I recently used this plugin on my own blog. You can see it in action in this recent list postI published. As you can see, the table is rather fetchingly presented, and you can sort the data by columns. Very fancy.
How Does It Work?
When it comes to creating a table in WordPress using WP-Tables Reloaded, you have two options:
1.Create the table with the plugin
2.Import the table as a .csv file
The first option is all well and good, but I want to focus on the second option. Why?Because nearly everyone is familiar with how to use spreadsheet software.Even if you don’t have Excel, you can use Open Officeor Google Docsto prepare your table. Producing a spreadsheet in one of those programs and then importing it is easier than creating a table with the plugin.
If you are wondering what a .csv file is, it is simply a widely-recognized format for spreadsheet files. You can open up a .csv file in any spreadsheet program and it will render correctly. And that is the format that WP-Tables Reloaded wants you to use. Every spreadsheet program in the world allows you to save in the .csv format.
How Do I Use It?
Say you wanted to produce a table of your top 10 favorite albums of all time. Obviously, the first thing you need to do is install WP-Table Reloadedon your WordPress blog. Then, you need to create the spreadsheet in your software of choice:
Wow – you have truly awful taste in music.
Once you’ve collated all of the data, you need to save it in .csv format:

Now go to your WordPress Dashboard and click Tools > WP-Table Reloaded in your sidebar. You’ll be presented with a few options. Click on “Import a Table”:
On the next screen, you just need to select your .csv file on your computer and hit the “Import Table” button:
Once you have successfully imported the table, you will be presented with an initially overwhelming number of options, but don’t worry –you can ignore the majority of them.
The Table Information in the first widget on your screen is for your eyes only – so you do notneedto change anything in those fields.
Below that, you have the Table Contents widget:
As you can see, WP-Table Reloaded has grabbed all of the information from your spreadsheet and placed it into your WordPress Dashboard. From here you can edit the content as you see fit.
What then follows is a multitude of options for sorting and presenting your content. I could spend a lot of time explaining everything, but you are unlikely to need it. I would take a few moments to carefully read the options, as they are pretty self-explanatory. I personally prefer to disable pagination, filtering/search, and the table information display – but you might want to do things a little differently.
The fact is, your table is good to go as soon as you have imported it – it is then just a case of fine-tuning if you want to.
Going back to the top of the page, you will notice a shortcode:
Just place that shortcode into any post or page, and the table will appear, as if by magic!
Scratching The Surface
I have covered the basic functionality of WP-Table Reloaded here, but it is a pretty powerful plugin that allows you manipulate tables in multiple ways. Fortunately, it is accompanied by exhaustive documentatio n, so exploring the plugin’s features does not have to involve guesswork.

This is by far one of the most important plugins I utilize on several sites. It’s very powerful, non-buggy and just works. I make sure to donate multiple times when I’m able;)
If anyone is wondering how it handles large sites, we are using this on a Multisite install and managing almost 1k tables in total, each containing links to product documentation and have never had an issue.
Use it now, and make sure to donate to the plugin dev…

Tom, I heartily agree with your sentiment on this plugin. It simply does what it says and does it well… I use it extensively for small tables. Unfortunately, small is the keyword… once you start going into larger tables (say 5,000 records) you run into issues with it’s admin setup which doesn’t paginate the table, even though it does paginate when the visitor to your website sees the table. If you’re looking to incorporate larger datasets you’re better off building something custom.

Hi Tom. Do you know if the plugin can show a popup image on rollover on the lines of the tables..?

Not that I’m aware of Janus, but it may be worth contacting the developer!
