Nice Weekend
It seems there is a mint actually called Mojito!
We went to an Organic Farmers Expo at the JCCC and found it. Had to get it. Will see if its really better. Also some cheesy bread, gardening supplies, free heirloom seeds for lemon cucumbers and colorful eggs. Had lunch at the food truck outside, it was good, but has to wait 30 minutes after ordering for the food.
Saw the two new exhibits at the art museum. Contemporary American Indian Artand dy/nas/ty
dy/nas/ty was very surprising and so much more to see live and in person. You don't get any of the 3D bling explosion from the pictures. The tapestries are embellished with jewelry, artificial flowers and crazy fabric. The walls were covered with floral wallpaper and artificial flowers and handcrafted balls were on the floor.
M&Ms holiday Carrot Cake version - I love carrot cake, not so thrilled with this so they were easy to share. Disappointed because the Candy Corn ones at Halloween were great.
Started the major Spring Cleaning. Windows. and other stuff.
Did some sewing for work - another monster for a sewing program.
Finished a great book - Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. Just delightful.

My First Blackout Poem
The two page design ended up like this.
Adapted the woman's face from a template in this book, borrowed from the library. I thought she looked perfect with the poem.

I've Become Obsessed With P. L. Travers
And, yes, obsessed may be a bit strong. She's just been on my mind.
I had to see this movie* (one of the very few I've seen this year) because I have memories of seeing Mary Poppinswhen I was a child. It was a big deal. We went as a family - it was an event. I loved her magic. Her fantastical world.
I was a child who loved creating fantasy worlds in my head and sometimes in my real world. I was a craft kid, loved making things. And it was an inside me. On the outside I was a rather quiet, serious, studious, smart, kid. I'm sure many never knew what was going on in my head. And parts of that child are still in my head, why wouldn't they be?
And I was a reader. A prolific reader, and yet, I don't remember ever reading Mary Poppins. Perhaps it was because I wasn't at the age to read those books at that time. I don't remember my parents reading aloud to us as children. Not a bad thing, I read on my own. I loved books about a fantasy world attached to the real world. The books of Rumor Godden were special favorites. Charlotte's Web. Even The Secret Garden because it seemed a magical escape (maybe why I love the arboretum). Thiswas my princess book. And Tasha Tudor was a discovery in my younger adult life. And, yes, all of these books have a certain type of girl in them and, yes, I'm sure that means something.
So I'm reading Mary Poppins and I love it. I had no intention of reading the series, but I just might. There is no saving of Mr. Banks in the book, wonder where that came from? It's bringing back all these wonderful places in my mind. And, of course, it's different than the movie, and I love them both. The right fantasy world, the right Mary Poppins is in the movie.
The move portrays Travers as a child who had and created fairy worlds and as a grown woman who put away her fantasy life. I could see me as a child, teen, in her. I have a biography on hold. Ineedto know more.
Note: While this post has nothing to do with all the controversies around the movie and the characters in it, such as this, and worse, I feel the need to add my thoughts about it. It's a movie. I know that. It's about the fantasy. The kind of fantasy I loved and lived and just maybe, still do. I love the fantasy. And that's OK. It made me happy.

I've Figured Out How to be The Best Grandmother Ever
Not that that's going to happen.
It's just part of things rambling around my head right now what with reading Mary Poppins.
Turkish Delight & Treasure Hunts
I've never wanted to be the Auntie Mame type, but this may be the ticket.

Mistakes
I have been intrigued lately with the concepts of mistakes and failure and how they appear in articles, books, theories.
Interesting one here.
"I kind of like to stir the pot (laughs) in that way," says Mortimer. "I know that sometimes, in some people’s opinion, it’s been too far, too preachy, or too this or too that. But I have no problem with making those kinds of mistakes in public, and trying to navigate and learn from it, and see what comes of it."
I have been to the exhibit and it was great. There were three high school girls there when I walked in having a blast. They said to me - You have to see this!!! It's so cool. Can you take our picture? He would have loved it.
So thinking I need to capture some of what I'm finding.
I had a word of the year, as in previous years. Now wondering if I should change it. Maybe that's why I haven't put it out there yet.

Hipster Irish Viking
A while back, last summer, looking at magazines at a book store, the kid and I came across this project. We had Ireland and Vikings on the mind and thought I should make this. He likes lots of pillows and stuff. So I said I would. And as I usually do things, it takes lots longer than I planned.
Not all my fault - the pattern was missing a pattern for the arms and shirt dimensions.
I also couldn't find the right fabric.
It did seem appropriate I finally found a sweater and hat at the thrift store I could cut up and use because the kid gets most of his clothes at the thrift store.
The result is below. All three feet of him. We are happy.

Ah, he does it again
My kid is something else. He is going through a couple of months worth of mail.
He tells me that when he wasn't working, so he wouldn't feel like such a drag on society, he decided to join causes he believed in so he could contribute to the world. Now that he is working, he is narrowing down his options. Save the oceans? Save the trees? Send petitions to the White House? ACLU?
It's actually pretty cool.
He is so excited. He is going to get 10 free trees.

This AND That
Taken from a current commercial - is AND better than OR?
The workplace is working to define itself for the next 5 or so years. I'm reading and hearing interesting things. Some seem, well, not exactly contradictory, but opposing. Are we about inside sales, so to speak, or the online access. Can we be both with the resources/staff we have? Who is dictating our tactics - outside organizations who say they have surveyed the people and know what they want, those with grand ideas above, or the line staff?
Interesting.
For example, this articlethis morning made me think. I have some questions. (I always have questions; there may be a small movement to think that's OK now.) He found a solution that works for him, his way of using, knowing and doing while acknowledging others have different preferences.
Read a discussion about having a journalist on staff. Is our role to create content? Is it part of our mission? Can we make it work in that context?
What is content? We have a nice online catalog that allows us to group and sort items and even add links to the web. Is that creating content or just relationships? Are relationships content?
We acknowledged how much people in our area are using their devices to find content. Should we search content like the article and organize it? Add it to a list in our catalog? The good websites, I mean. Will that make us more relevant? We talk about putting book in content neighborhoods in the buildings, should we add online content to our neighborhoods online?
How will answering these questions fit our mission or change it?
By the way, I love the last bit of the article. " . . . choice can be paralyzing." When do people want the deciding done for them? That fits many situations.
