(Brad Loper/The Dallas Morning News) SMU’s Larry Brown has seen a lot coaching basketball for 50 years, but he never witnessed what happened during the Mustangs’ 68-54 win over UC Irvine on Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum. Two second-half fouls called on UC Irvine were reversed after the fact. The first resulted in SMU having two points subtracted. Brown, whose team is still stinging from being snubbed by the NCAA Tournament, said: “I thought one of the committee members of the NCAA decided to do that.” SMU’s Nic Moore made two free throws to give the Mustangs a 53-42 lead with 8:16 left. But after a dead ball in Cal Irvine’s end, officials conferred and ruled that Moore should not have taken the shots because they were not in the bonus. So the points were subtracted, then UC Irvine inbounded and scored to make it 51-42. Officials explained to a pool reporter: “At the time we were told we were in the bonus, in the 1-1, when in fact we were not. The personal foul was the sixth foul. Therefore the ball should have been taken out of bounds. Such errors must be recognized and corrected by an official during the first dead ball after the clock had been started. We were in the correctable error timeframe, and by rule, we removed the unmerited free throws.” One problem: SMU should have had the ball if not awarded foul shots. “Points taken off I can see,” Brown said. “But why would we lose the ball? In this day and age, fouls are not reverse-able.” *** SMU students have been camping out for free tickets, but since tournament tickets cannot be given away, donors purchased 750 tickets — to fill the entire student section on the floor — for Monday’s game against LSU.
